We are so excited to be kicking off the Urban Design Studio Blog!
We envision this space to be one of discovery, conversation and collaboration on topics related to Urban Design.
But first things first – allow me to introduce us:
Hi- We are Michael Baker International’s Urban Design Studio - otherwise known as UDS.
We are a multidisciplinary team of planners, landscape architects, architects and engineers, solely devoted to projects that improve the physical and social environments of the communities we serve. We respond to the needs of city residents who are looking for communities designed to offer sustainable, healthy and vibrant places to live, work and play.
Our UDS team members’ expertise lies in urban design, sustainability, mobility, public facilitation and community-based planning with meaningful public participation. Our process starts with the evaluation the unique design needs of our clients’ community. We then bring together the UDS members with the most precise expertise necessary to steer a project from the visioning and coding phases to the implementation of innovative solutions. The group’s efforts ultimately result in the development of creative, context-sensitive design solutions that represent the consensus of multiple stakeholders.
We help communities across the country get things done.
UDS operates as both a virtual studio providing Urban Design and related services to clients located across the nation as well as a series of physical design studio ‘hubs’ located in Alexandria, Virginia, Santa Ana, California, Jacksonville, Florida, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Our UDS team is led by Susan Harden, Community Planning National Practice Leader (California), with John Fennell, Landscape Architect (Virginia), Shane Burkhardt, Urban Planning (California), Sachin Kalbag, Urban Designer (Virginia), Michael Hathorne (Utah), Fred Jones (Florida) and Pam Johns (California).

• Implementation is an Explicit Objective
So that’s a little about us.
It’s Great to meet you! Now – about this BLOG.
The UDS Blog is a place where we will start discussions on a wide range of topics related to urban design. Articles will be written by our UDS professionals in planning, landscape architecture, architecture, and related disciplines as well as collaborators in local government and the design and construction industries. We will have 3 main types of blog posts – project focused; concept focused; and collaboration focused.
Now tell us about YOU!
We envision this BLOG as a conversation between you and the UDS team. Comments that you provide will be curated by the team. We will answer questions and provide other resources relative to the posts. We look forward to engaging the design community.
Welcome to the UDS neighborhood!
